Diego Martin-Etxebarria



 



 Winner of the 1st Prize, the Hideo Saito Award and the Asahi Award at the 17th Tokyo International Music Competition for Conducting, he recently was appointed 1. Kapellmeister stellvertrender GMD at Theater Krefeld-Mönchengladbach and during season 17/18 will conduct there Verdi's „Nabucco“, Puccini's "Gianni Schicchi", Mascagni's "Cavalleria rusticana", Kalmans' "Die Faschingsfee", Menotti's „Der Konsul“ and the Ballett „Sinfonie des Lebens“ (Premiere). Graduated in Conducting in Barcelona he also attended courses by David Zinman, J. López Cobos, G. Gelmetti, L. Köhler, D. Slobodeniouk... He was granted by the Humboldt Foundation and the DAAD-La Caixa for postgraduate studies in opera conducting at the HfM “Franz Liszt” Weimar and at the HfM “Carl Maria von Weber” in Dresden where he obtained the “Konzertexam” degree. Afterwards he served as Assistant Conductor at the Bilbao Opera House (with Riccardo Frizza and Donato Renzetti), the Royal Opera House in Madrid, the Konzert Theater Bern (both with Titus Engel), the Semperoper Dresden, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées (with Riccardo Frizza) and the Spanish National Youth Orchestra.



  Artistic Director of the Art Ensemble Barcelona (2004-2007) and Principal Conductor of the Akademisches Orchester Freiburg (2010-2012) and the Euskadiko Ikasleen Orchestra (Basque Country, 2007-2008) he has also guest conducted the Osaka Philharmonic, Nagoya Philharmonic, Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra, Kansai Philharmonic Orchestra, Bilbao Symphony, Euskadi Symphony, Galicia Symphony, Tenerife Symphony, Ciudad de Granada Symphony, Málaga Philharmonic, Vallès Symphony Orchestra, Erzgebirgische Philharmonie Aue, Vogtland Philharmonie, Ensemble der Sächsischen Gesellschaft für Neue Musik, Camerata Variabile Basel,...



  As music director in opera he has conducted Paul-Heinz Dittrich's "Die Blinden" and "Die Verwandlung" at the Berliner Staatsoper, Humperdinck's "Hänsel und Gretel" and Menotti's "The Consul" at Theater Krefeld-Mönchengladbach, Donizetti's "Don Pasquale" at the Auditorium in Terrassa (Barcelona), Mozart's "Die Zauberflöte" at the Kleines Haus in Dresden, Donizetti's "Rita" at the Volksbühne in Berlin, Donizetti's "L'Elisir d'Amore" at Auditorio Mar de Vigo, Puccini's "La Bohème" at the Augsburger Theater, Adès' "Powder her face" at Teatro Arriaga, Montsalvatge's "Puss in boots" in Teatre Real (Madrid), Bizet's "Carmen" at Festival de Santa Florentina and Serra's "Tempesta Esvaïda" at Teatre Fortuny (Reus).



  He has recorded the CD "Intimitats" with awarded music by composer Marc Timón, Enric Morera's zarzuela "La viola d'or" (Critic's Choice Best Classical Album at Enderrock Awards 2016), the DVD "Sinfokids 2" conducting the Orquesta Sinfónica de Euskadi, and Joaquim Serra's short opera "Tempesta esvaïda", leading the Orquestra Camera Musicae.
